Michigan Legislature Ponders Medical Insurance For Autism

The Michigan Legislature is considering legislation that would require health insurers to provide coverage for autism treatment. According to the Center for Disease Control, about 1 in 150 eight year have this type of developmental disability and treatments can cost up to $50,000 per year.

Currently eleven states have legislation requiring health insurers to cover autism treatment. Illinois, Texas, Pennsylvania, Arizona, Florida, South Carolina, Connecticut and Louisiana have all added these statutes in the past two years.

The Michigan Legislature was prompted to act due to a pending lawsuit against Blue Cross Blue Shield. The lawsuit is seeking to force the health insurer to cover autism treatments on the same level it covers other types of disorders.

Within the past decade, similar actions ended with health insurers adding coverage to cover diabetes treatments. Now lawmakers are hoping for a simiar ending.
